3 Crescent Towing Tugs Selected as Among the 10 Significant Boats of 2017

WorkBoat has selected Crescent Towing’s three newest z-drive tugboats, the Arkansas, Mardi Gras, and South Carolina, as among the 10 Significant Boats of 2017, and will recognize Crescent Towing of the Cooper Group of companies for this award at the annual International WorkBoat Show in New Orleans, La. at the end of November. It is also at that time that WorkBoat will select the 2017 Boat of the Year from these top 10 vessels.

Each of these z-drive vessels has an extraordinary total of 5,500 horsepower, thus making the Mardi Gras and South Carolina the most powerful ship assist tugs operating on the Mississippi River.

Andrew Cooper, Crescent Towing Senior Vice President, said this of the award, “Having our three newest tugs being named to WorkBoat’s 10 Significant Boats of 2017 is a great and humbling honor. We’re proud to accept this award on behalf of the dedicated and experienced team of mariners who operate these state of the art vessels every day on the Mississippi River and in the ports of Mobile and Savannah.”

The trio of tugs features a unique staple position that offers improved steering by 30 percent and increased stability. Further, the tugs’ high horsepower and deep-draft are ideally suited for safety, long-term serviceability and the ever-increasing size, tonnage and draft of the today’s cargo ships.

“Our team’s goal was to build our industry’s most advanced tugs that would not just meet our customers’ expectations but greatly exceed them,” said Keith Kettenring, Crescent Towing Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “Paired with our team of experienced mariners, these tugs will provide unmatched power and service to ships calling our ports.”

The vessels were designed by Jenson Maritime Consultants and were built at Steiner Shipyard in Bayou La Batre, Ala. The 92-foot vessels each feature two modern Rolls Royce 255 z-drive propulsion systems and two, low-maintenance G.E. 8L-250 diesel engines. Two 99 kilowatt-hour (kW) John Deere generator sets provide the tugs’ electrical power.

“We are proud that the tugboats not only exceeded our clients’ [Crescent Towing] expectations, but are being used to set the standards in the field for ‘green’ technology and smart design features,” said Jensen’s Bryan Nichols, director, business development.  “We are proud to have developed them in-house and to be recognized by WorkBoat for our vision.”
